Question and Answer : Home school with Toddlers and Home school to College

Q: How do you keep your toddlers occupied while teaching older children?

A: I think we should have a lot of patience on this situation. First, I hand out some home works to the older that they can finish it by themselves as practices for them, such as

Then if the toddlers can not sit for more than 5 to 10 minutes. Sometime they want to do the same things as what the older do. If in that case, you can try start giving him some easy lessons to do for the toddlers, such as Alphabet Printable Activities and other worksheets or other toddlers activities art and craft.

When the toddlers are sleeping or quiet playing with their toys or someone can help you to accompany the toddlers, then you can teach the older more deep.
My husband is my special help on this situation.
I hope you can find someone can help you, too.

Q: HOW did you teach your kids high school so quickly, with what books?

A: We only have used books that we got it free from book bank. You can use any book as long as the kids understand and learn.

Q: WHAT can I do to prepare my children to apply for community college this coming fall?

A: You need to prepare them that they are ready for college academically and their maturity that they are ready for college life.

Q: Did they take SAT s? What entrance exams should they study for?

A: It depends to how the university or college admission requirements. You have to ask to the admission office of that university or college. Some of the community college doesn't need SAT test score, they only want your kids to have their placement tests. Most of the university ask SAT or ACT score.

Q: What areas do I need them to master? As they only master what they like--and I've been fine with this until now...especially because all their strengths are in Math & Science.

A: I think the kids need to master in Math, Language Arts (Reading and Writing), and some others subjects, such as Science, Social Study, 1-2 Foreign Language if they want to take that in that major.

Q: What about their Spelling & Writing skills? Your advise, tips?

A: Spelling & Writing skill for high school is good for kids to prepare ready for college. The tip is a lot of practices.

Q: What about Qur'an? How many hours a day? Just listen and memorize? Or write, translate, and comprehend?

A: Qur'an is part of our life. At least 15-30 minutes, we have to read, memorize, and learn about it. Most of time the kids love to do read, memorize, and learn the meaning of Al Qur'an and. Once a week, we read hadiths together.

Q: Do you teach your language as a subject too? Because we do Arabic grammar, writing, typing, etc. as a separate subject.

A: Yes, I teach my language to my kids. I don't put it as foreign language, but I put it in one of a cultural learning in Social Study subject. My kids learn Arabic, Spanish, and Japanese as their foreign languages.

Insha Allah, I will put some more answers for other questions, soon.

Happy Homeschooling to all of you.

Islamic Story: "Zaid Gets Honor For His Qur'an"

Zaid ibn Thabit (radiallahu anhu) was six when he lost his father. He was eleven at the time of Hijrah. He offered himself for Badr but was rejected because of his young age. He volunteered for Uhud. He was not permitted to do as we saw in the Badr story. He participated in all the campaigns.

While the Mujahidin were marching towards Tabuk, the flag of Banu Malik was held by Amarah (radiallahu anhu).
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) bade him hand over the flaq to Zaid.
Amarah (radiallahu anhu) thought that perhaps somebody had complained about him which had displeased Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

He therefore said; "O'Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), is it due to somebody complaining against me?"

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "No, but Zaid knows more Qur'an that you do. His Qur'an has given him that honor."

It was common with Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that he gave preference to the people in accordance with their virtues. Although this was an occasion of battle and knowldege of Qur'an had no bearing on the issue, yet Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) gave preference to Zaid (radiallahu anhu) for his Qur'an.

This distinction we see on other occasions as well.
When a number of dead persons had to be accommodated in one grave (as in Uhud), they buried in order of their knowledge of the Qur'an, priority being given to those who knew more of it.

Insha Allah, we will try to increase our knowledge about Qur'an.
May Allah make it easy to lean more about Qur'an. Ameen.

Homeschooling with Toddlers or Baby

If you have toddlers or baby while you are doing homeschooling, there are so many things you can do for the toddlers.
Here are some advices.
  • To meet the needs of the little one first.
  • To start homeschooling when the small one is not disturbing you.
  • To prepare all their homeworks for the olders for the next morning.
  • To read them out loud together or give them learning activities.
  • To go outside together, such as field trip, goint to park, etc.

When the olders are busy finishing their homeworks, I can do something else. They will come to me whenever they need help on their homeworks. If I need more time for the olders then I have to choose the right time to explain and teach the olders. You can choose the time when the young one is sleeping or enjoy playing toys.
Insha Allah, you will be fine.

You may also want to check out the activities for the toddlers, such as:

Please do not forget to have a lot of patience and a lot of doa everyday.
May Allah make it easy on your homeschooling. Ameen.

He had go through the same with other applicant to that college.
He did very well. Alhamdulillah.

Now he is really going to have that experience in this Fall 2010. The class will start on August 30, 2010. He is ready with the textbook, pencil, and paper college. This is what my kids said to me,"Please buy for us paper for college not the wide ruled line paper. I didn't realize that there are two different kinds of papers.

Ramadan Mubaraak to You and Your Family

Alhamdulillah, it's Ramadan.
We need to increase more our eeman and ibadaah everyday in this Ramadan.
Please teach our kids to fast and to increase more their knowledge about our religion.
You can bring them to masjid to do taraweeh.

  • The Month of Ramadan in which the Qur’an was revealed, a guidance for mankind, [containing] clear proofs of guidance, and the criterion of distinguishing right from wrong. (Al-Qur’an 2:185 )

  • There are two joys for those who fast.
On the authority of Abu Harayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) it is reported that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said,
"Allah(swt) says: The Fast is for Me and I will give the reward for it, as he (the one who observes the fast) leaves his sexual desire, food and drink for My Sake. Fasting is like a shield (from sins and the hellfire), and he who fasts has two joys: a joy when he breaks his fast and a joy when he will meet his Lord (on the day of judgement). And the smell emanating from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the Sight of Allah than even the smell of musk.'"
    [Bukhari and Muslim]

  • If you are fasting but not praying the obligatory, then you have to fix your eeman. We have to remember that sholat is the thing Allah will ask us in the Day of Judgement.
Please keep doing in time your 5 times obligatory sholat in a day.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) it is related that he once heard the Prophet (Peace be upon him) say,
"What would you think if there were a river running by the door of the house of anyone of you, and he bathed in it 5 times a day, everyday, would any trace of dirt be left on him?" The people said: "No, there would be no trace of dirt on him." The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: "This is like the 5 daily prayers, through which Allah cleanses you and washes away your past sins"
    [Bukhari and Muslim]

  • Please do not forget to make dua before break your fas, because Allah will accpet the Du'a at the time of Iftar.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) it is related that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said,
    "There are three people whose `Du'a' is not rejected;
    - the fasting person until he breaks the fast,
    - the just ruler,
    - and the oppressed person,
whose Duaa Allah lifts above the clouds and opens unto it the doors of Jannah, and Allah says: "I swear by My Honour, verily I shall assist you, even though it may be after some time."

    [Ahmad and Tirmidhi]

  • Helping others in this Ramadan is very good deed, too.
Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) narrates that
"The Messenger of Allah(saw) was the most generous person, and he used to be most generous in Ramadan…"
    [Bukhari]
Imam Ash-Shaafi'e (May Allah have mercy upon him), once said,
`It is beloved to me to see one increasing his acts of generosity during the month of Ramadhan, following the example of Allah's Messenger, and for one's own good. There are many who become over-occupied with fasting and Prayers, forgetting the other benefits of the month of Ramadhan [i.e. forgetting about the benefits and rewards for being generous towards others].'
    [Lataa'if-ul Maaarif]

  • Let's increase more our ibadaah in the night of power – Laylatul Qadr.
On the authority of Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) who reports that "once when Ramadhan commenced, the Messenger of Allah (saw) said:
"A month has verily dawned over you wherein lies a night (i.e. Laylatul Qadr) which is better than a thousand months. Whoever misses such a night has indeed been deprived of all that is good; and none is deprived of it, except he who is really unfortunate."
    [Ibn Majah]

Happy Ramadan.

May Allah accept all our ibadah in this Ramadan. Ameen.
